Canon's First Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera: EOS-R

Last week, Tim and I attended the launch of the new Canon EOS R - Canon’s first 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor mirrorless interchangeable-lens digital camera with an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF).

Thirty years after the inception of the world-renowned EOS system by global imaging leader, Canon, a new era of photography and creativity begins with the launch of the Canon EOS R. The new imaging system of cameras and lenses is designed to reimagine optical excellence, and is expected to raise the bar in photography and videography with pioneering features fit for today’s visual storytellers.
“We at Canon Philippines are very much delighted to announce yet another milestone not just for the brand but for the future of photography and even the small office & home office businesses. The addition of the new EOS R to the continuing Canon EOS System not only redefines the boundaries of photography and videography, it revolutionizes it,” said Benny Yu, Canon Marketing (Philippines), Inc. (CMPI) Head of Consumer Imaging and Information division.

The EOS R boasts the world’s fastest near-instantaneous focusing speed of 0.05 seconds, a full-frame Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor that features an incredible 5,655 manually selectable AF points, and an impressive ISO sensitivity range of 100-40,000 for stills and 100–25,600 for video. It not only delivers phenomenal image quality at 30.3 megapixels, but also allows shooting in low-light scenes achievable. Driven by the latest DIGIC 8 imaging processor, its Auto Lighting Optimizer applies gradient to deliver intricate details in highlights and shadows for a well-balanced image.

Compact, lightweight, and incredibly responsive– the Canon EOS R does an amazing job for my destination shoot travels, portraits, and weddings. I shoot a lot of low light environments during wedding events and even when I find myself cranking up the ISO levels even to ISO 6,000, the results are still impressive!” shared Pat Dy, famous wedding and fashion photographer and Canon Crusader of Light.

The EOS R System also takes pride in its first four RF lenses representing a new frontier in lens design for mirrorless cameras. In addition to the focus and zoom rings found on conventional EF lenses, the RF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, RF50mm f/1.2L USM, RF28-70mm f/2L USM, and RF35mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM all incorporate a control ring to which users can directly adjust numerous settings including shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation and more.

“Combined with the new RF lenses, the Canon EOS R is truly designed to take today’s visual storytellers into tomorrow,” proclaimed Edwin Martinez, landscape photographer and Canon Crusader of Light.

Engineered to work seamlessly with RF lenses, the EOS R maintains complete compatibility with the EF and EF-S lenses by using one of three optional Mount Adapters—Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, and Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R.

“The EF to RF Adapters will reinvent the way your Canon System works and transcend your photography. It allows flexibility to deliver amazing results depending on how you want your output to be,” said Jijo de Guzman, sports and action photographer and Canon Crusader of Light.

Editorial photographer and Canon Crusader of Light Wesley Villarica also added, “The EOS R system is set to redefine your experience, no matter what genre of photography you specialize in. The lightweight camera and revolutionary optics of the system enables you to literally and figuratively take your photography to new heights.”
The EOS R records in Ultra High Definition 4K at 30p/25p (3840 x 2160 pixels), and supports Canon’s proprietary Canon Log offering flexible control over shadows and highlights to achieve better subtle details in the bright and dark areas during post-processing and color grading with a rich 10-bit output gradation and a wide color gamut through the HDMI terminal.

Paired with RF lenses, the EOS R can make 1/8 stops aperture adjustments during video recording, allowing precise control over exposure to match lighting conditions. Using the Focus Guide function, users can achieve focus more accurately with better control with a display to indicate whether subject is in focus, front focus, or rear focus.
