Bakere Cafe, Kapitolyo

Bakere Cafe
A couple of weeks after visiting Siam Thai and Don Bao, my friends and I went back to Kapitolyo in search of yet another new restaurant. We stumbled upon Bakere Cafe where we tried a bunch of dishes - everything from salads, pastas, sandwiches, rice bowls, and of course, dessert!
Bakere Cafe
I'm telling you, having friends who love to eat is an amazing thing. You can bond over food for hours upon hours! Sometimes, we even do food crawls where we visit two or three restaurants in a day! (And yes, we eat our hearts out every single time. Haha!)
Bakere Cafe
I don't know if it's just me, but upon seeing the name Bakere, I thought it was some kind of Japanese cafe, Ba-ke-re. It wasn't long before I found out that the name is meant to be pronounced as bakery.

It's kind of confusing, but it makes much more sense once you see the type of dishes they offer.
Bakere Cafe
To start, we had the Caesar and Asian Chicken Salads.

Asian Chicken (P195)

Both of these dishes came out differently than I expected. I mean I didn't think I'd find bacon or noodles in either of them; these definitely gave the salads a good texture. Plus I really like how flavorful Bakere made each one. It doesn't feel like you're eating a bunch of leafy greens, so even my friends who don't normally like salads enjoyed these.

Next, we had the Carbonara, Lasagna, and Amatriciana. Carbs galore, I know, but I love it! When I was younger, my parents would always order spaghetti for me whenever we would eat out, so I feel like I have to have some sort of pasta dish at every meal. I'm glad Bakere has a number to choose from on their menu.

Carbonara (P245)

I like that the Carbonara is not too creamy, so you don't feel like you've already had too much just after a few bites. It's more traditional in the sense that they use egg yolks, rather than starting with a cream of mushroom base (which, let's face it, everyone can do at home).

Lasagna (P375)
Bakere Cafe
Among the three, this has to be my favorite. I don't know about you, but I love burnt cheese on baked pasta, especially on the edges of lasagna!! Luckily, the folks over at Bakere love it too - so much so that they actually use special lasagna pans so that every order comes with those delicious burnt edges!

Amatriciana (P255)
Bakere Cafe
The Amatriciana was also a good find, since I'm all about tomato-based pasta. No, not the sweet Filipino-style pasta. Italian-style is where it's at. And this one hits the spot.

For the sandwiches, these are the favorites: Grilled Cheese and BXU.
Bakere Cafe
The Grilled Cheese Sandwich (P250) was so good that the moment I dipped it into their tangy tomato soup, I forgot everything else. It is made with a combination of three different types of cheeses - mozzarella, cheddar, and quick melt. Try not to take too long in capturing this baby as it is best eaten while it's still warm and gooey. I never thought I'd find a grilled cheese + tomato soup combo that I love as much I do Borough's, but here we are.
Bakere Cafe
The BXU or Butuan Lechon Sandwich (P335) is the owner RJ Galang's signature dish. Being that a lot of items on the menu are family recipes, RJ really wanted to have his own amazing recipe that he could pass on from generation to generation as well. The role that the BXU Sandwich played in Bakere is definitely huge - so huge in fact that RJ didn't want to open the cafe until it was perfect.
Bakere Cafe
The BXU is made up of Butuan lechon (with crispy skin for added texture), homemade slaw, coconut vinegar, and a special sauce sandwiched between toasted ciabatta buns. I don't think I have ever encountered a sandwich that tastes quite like this - it's salty, sweet, and sour at the same time. Definitely my most favorite sandwich to date.
Bakere Cafe
For those who prefer their lechon with rice, you'll be glad to know that Bakere also has the BXU Rice for Php 290. ;)

And finally, the classic Meatballs with Gravy (P260).
Bakere Cafe
For dessert, we got to taste a lot of really good ones, but what really stood out for me are their Grilled Ensaymadas and Cheese Cupcakes.

Everything was made by RJ's mom, baking legend Eleanor Calo Galang.
