Last Saturday, Amici held a pizza and pasta workshop for the kids of Tuloy Foundation in partnership with U! Happy Events.
Tuloy Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization founded by Salesian priest Fr. Rocky Evangelista. It is focused on giving street children hope for a better life. Their mission: To be a Center of Excellence in the reintegration of street children into mainstream society through a comprehensive program of caring, healing and teaching. TULOY admits street children, providing them with basic needs: food, clothing, shelter, basic education, and vocational skills training; but most important, values and spiritual formation. It has, since its foundation in 1993, already affected the lives of over 10,000 street children, currently serving as many as 800 children.
It was my second time volunteering with U! Happy Events - the first time was a week prior, when they held their Happy Not Hungry event for the children of the fallen and wounded soldiers of Marawi. I used to volunteer for Ateneo Special Education Society when I was in college, but that was a long time ago. So I'm really glad to have been given the chance to spend time with these kids and possibly make a difference in their lives.
As it turns out, two of Amici's employees at Ayala Triangle came from Tuloy Foundation. It just shows the role of TULOY in changing the lives of street children. It was also nice for the kids since they were able to see how they, too, can have a future despite not having parents to care for them.
One of their tasks that afternoon was to draw their dreams and aspirations - how they see themselves in a couple of years. Where will they be? Will they have families? What kind of work would they be doing? My kids Pam, Ritz, and Arjhane were shy at first, so I decided to draw my own dreams with them. In the end, Pam saw herself as a teacher; Ritz as a stewardess; and Arjhane as a nurse.
After that, it was time for the main event - the pizza and pasta workshop! The activity was led by Chef Paolo Moran himself. He explained how to prepare each dish as well as talked about proper hygiene and the importance of washing hands and wearing hairnets while in the kitchen.
Sharing with you now photos of the kids in action:
