After eating our hearts out at Love Desserts (see photos on my Instagram), the folks of The Food Crawlers and I headed to our next destination – 13 Ubay St. Yes, that’s both the address AND the name of the restaurant we went to. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to join them again when they celebrated their anniversary and launched new dishes a few weeks back, but that’s okay, because this is definitely not the first and last time I’m paying 13 Ubay a visit.
13 Ubay St. Comfort Dining takes inspiration from many things, but basically, it all started with the Sarmiento family. 13 Ubay St. was a family home that turned into a printing press, and now, a restaurant. The entire space is filled with art pieces, including a huge mask collection, from their family’s travels, as well as works from veteran photojournalist Joe Sarmiento.
It’s a very instagrammable place, that’s for sure, but no doubt, their best attraction is their food. Here, they offer comfort food inspired by trips around the world and prepared by the entire family. “No dish goes to the menu without going through a series of taste tests and a yes from everyone. You can say every dish here is a labor of love in generous serving. Because every member of the family puts a little of themselves and a lot of their love in the making of this place you can call home.” I love the whole idea of home and how being here feels like you’re being welcomed into their abode – almost feels like your part of the family! We got to meet Chef Zaza and her mom Edna there, who was the most entertaining Tita ever! Salamat po!
To start, we tried the following appetizers:
Trese Popcorn (P50)
tossed in their signature flavoring
Fried Tripe (P200)
deep fried honey comb tripe with green chilies
Bacon Pizza (P250)
thin crust pizza topped with grilled bacon, tomato sauce, cheese and egg
Out of the three, my favorite is the pizza. It's crazy good! Everything here is made from scratch, including the dough and the bacon! I could finish an entire pizza in one sitting!
Cheese and Raspberry Salad (P230)
mixed greens, red onion, cucumber, seasonal fruits, fried herb cheese served with raspberry vinaigrette
I also quite enjoyed their salad, however I wish the fried cheese balls had more cheese in it. No worries though, my craving for cheese was quickly satisfied by their specialty small plate.
Small Plates – Grilled Cheese (P170)
Small Plates – Grilled Cheese (P170)
homemade bacon wrapped mixed cheese with poached pear served with balsamic glaze
I loved this so much I ate three! The saltiness of the bacon and cheese combined with the sweetness of the pear was so unexpected. This is one unique treat that you can only find at 13 Ubay!
For the mains, here are their bestsellers:
Grilled Chicken Harissa (P370)
Grilled Chicken Harissa (P370)

Twice Cooked Ribs (P320)

Seafood Sambal (P250)
sautéed seafood in Oriental chili paste (mild, hot, extra hot)
Soy Glazed Beef Ribs (P350)
grilled ribs tossed in soy glaze with roasted garlic
grilled ribs tossed in soy glaze with roasted garlic
If you'll notice, they have everything from beef, chicken, seafood, and pork! So whatever your preference is, they have it! They actually launched new menu items for their first anniversary last month as well, so do pay them a visit soon!
Also, if you're the type of person who looks at the dessert section of a menu first before anything else, 13 Ubay is known for their Ube Piaya ala Mode and Ube Halaya Cheesecake, so make sure to leave room for those! :)
