I was excited since it was my first time to have "formal" lessons in baking. My kitchen experiments don't always go as planned (you can see them here), so to actually learn about the different baking methods and knowing the purpose of each ingredient is a huge deal for me. I can finally say I know how to bake now! Thanks to Joanna of Istorya Creations for choosing me as one of your giveaway winners!
Here's #JesBakes prepping us for our three-hour class!
She even prepared handouts with recipes and tips on how to bake cookies. I recommend the class for those with no prior or very minimal knowledge on baking. :)
For that afternoon, we made two kinds of cookies - Mocha Walnut Cookies and Oatmeal Cookie Sandwiches with Cream Cheese Filling!
Ready? Let's go!
The girls took turns measuring and mixing the ingredients :)
Since baking is a science, it is important to get everything precisely as indicated in the recipe.
Even a tiny mistake can make or break the outcome.
So if you want to try your hand at baking, invest in measuring cups and spoons. Better yet, use a weighing scale.
There's even a proper way to mix. If you overmix your batter, your baked goods can turn out tough/hard.
Once the dough is ready, put it in the freezer for about 30 minutes. It helps solidify the fat in the cookie, so your cookie doesn't turn out too flat.
Making the cream cheese filling
Once the dough has been chilled for enough time, scoop the cookie dough to get even sizes.
This isn't just for aesthetic purposes, but it is to ensure that the cookies are baked equally. The bigger it is, the longer it has to stay in the oven. So, if you make one batch in different sizes, you'll only end up under/overbaking some of your cookies.
Baking timeee! AKA we'll eat soon! :P
Nothing like a cup of hot choco while learning how to bake!
Messy hair, don't care! I'm making cookies today, Mommy!!
Oatmeal cookies fresh out of the oven!
Next step: Adding the cream cheese filling!
End result: Oatmeal Cookie Sandwich!!
Cookie #2: Mocha Walnut Cookies!
We added the dark chocolate chunks once the cookies were semi-baked then popped them back in the oven for two minutes so it comes out cute like this.
It was basically an eat-all-you-can-make cookie buffet, may take out pa! :P
