Super Duck Modern Tea Shop

Super Duck
No, they don't sell peking duck! :P

Super Duck
Super Duck is a Taiwanese milk tea franchise that originated in Lukang, Taiwan. Its story is a complicated one - one day, the owners of a milk tea shop decided to split up, so Mr. Huang, an employee, bought the rights to the company and continued its operations. When the old owner found out, he tried to extort Mr. Huang for more money, so Mr. Huang re-branded and changed their name to Super Duck.

During a trip to Taiwan with his wife, Steve Jimenez discovered Super Duck and thought that it was the best tasting milk tea he has ever tried. He wanted to franchise it, so he sought out a partner, an old classmate named Dennis Lim, and together, they brought the brand to the Philippines!
Super Duck
To date, Super Duck PH has two branches, both located in Quezon City - SM Cyberwest, and D. Tuazon. I had the pleasure of sampling their unique drinks and new dishes at the D. Tuazon branch (right beside Greeka Kouzina) with fellow Zomato Foodies.

We started off with some appetizers, also known here as Quackers. At Super Duck, they offer mostly vegetarian options, yet one will never know the difference. For example, they have cheesedog, nuggets, and calamares that are made from veggie meat. Some might be turned off at the thought of "fake meat," but I'd like to think of it as hitting two birds with one stone. You get to satisfy your craving (let's say, for nuggets), but in a healthier way. Here's a look at their Quackers:

Seriously, guys, this is how you get your kids to eat veggies - pretend it's real meat!! Haha just kidding. No, but really, have your kids try them first, see if they notice the difference. Afterwards, tell them them it's made from vegetables, so they realize that, "hey, vegetables are yummy!"

But of course, the Quackers are not just for kids. In fact, our group went through them pretty quickly, especially the Shrooms. I also liked the nuggets, but maybe they could serve it with barbecue sauce (ala McDonald's) instead of sweet chili sauce. Maybe?

Dynamite
Super Duck
The Dynamite is the only Quacker that contains real meat. It was surprisingly not that spicy.

Super Duck Fried Chicken with Gravy
Super Duck
I have nothing but good things to say about the chicken. It was that good. There isn't even a need to dip it into the gravy because the chicken was cooked with real tea leaves so it's flavorful enough. Some might even call it healthy. Hahaha!

12-Hour Tea-infused Pork Belly with Rice
Super Duck
I didn't really get to taste much of the tea here, but nevertheless it was good pork belly adobo. The meat was tender and the sauce, flavorful. Just be sure to eat it immediately or else the oil will harden.
Super Duck
For the pizzas, Super Duck came up with four flavors namely Vegetarian, Shrimp Pesto, Bacon Mushroom, and Hawaiian.

What I liked the most was the shrimp pesto and the bacon mushroom because their flavors stood out more. Their pizzas garnered a lot of attention because they are at P200-P250 each yet can very well stand against the panizzas of Italian restaurants. They just need to add some arugula and alfalfa on there and they're all set! But one thing that all their pizzas had in common was cheese, lots of it!! :)

Another thing they had us try that day was their veggie pasta offerings of which they had two - the Vegetarian Carbonara and the Spaghetti with Soy Meatballs.

Vegetarian Carbonara
Super Duck
The carbonara needs improvement for me. Maybe more cream and more flavor overall, but I love how they don't scrimp out on the cheese.

Spaghetti with Soy Meatballs
Super Duck
Surprisingly, people loved the soy meatballs. Or should it be soy balls? Haha! This dish for me tasted far from authentic Italian spaghetti with meatballs - what we recommended was maybe they could add some tomatoes. I look forward to trying this again once they've officially released their new menu!

Quack Pao
Super Duck
The Quack Pao for me was very good. It doesn't contain duck, like some people might think, but instead, pork belly. Best eaten when hot while the bun is still soft and the meat, tender.

Chori Burger with Matcha Basil Aioli
Super Duck
Another one of their unique offerings is this chori burger. A lot of people wondered what it was, it's made from real chorizo. The patty they use here is homemade. This dish has real potential, it just turned out a bit dry this time around. I also recommended they add more of that matcha basil aioli into this because it's an excellent match! Runny eggs would probably work in favor as well.

Egg Custard Pao
Super Duck
Salted egg custard, to be exact. I was surprised when I bit into this because I was expecting to taste something sweet, like leche flan. But they used salted egg, which I would never think of putting together with steamed bun. This turned out to be one of my favorite dishes that day.
Super Duck
What a feast! And it wasn't even close to being over!
Super Duck
We also got to taste their tea offerings, starting from the basic teas - black, green, oolong, white, and pu-erh tea. I really liked the black tea with a bit of sugar, but something to note would be the white tea which was very light, almost like water. After this, they had us sample their more unique bestsellers. For the drinks, it was honestly difficult to pick a favorite because they all stood out in their own way. Since we tried ten different kinds, I'll give you my top five: Wintermelon Nai Kai, Yakult Kiwi, Oreo Oolong Milk Smoothie, Pearl Milk Tea, and Rose Lemon Tea with Aloe Vera. Gaah, I'm craving for some now!

High quality tea, exquisite ingredients, and naturally organic - these are the three major factors that made Super Duck into what it is now.
